of the extended abstract of the K-Day 2023 in Bayreuth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">The importance of additive manufacturing (AM or 3D printing) has increased significantly in recent years.<br \/>\nAdditively manufactured components are used in a wide range of applications and are made from a wide variety of materials.<br \/>\nIn order not to miss out on this development, the software manufacturers of finite element systems have invested heavily in enabling the simulation of additive manufacturing with minimal user effort.<br \/>\nOne challenge, for example, is the activation of elements as a function of time and space, including the heat transfer that occurs.<br \/>\nAfter a brief insight into the state of the art in the literature, this article will use a simple example to illustrate the process preparation and simulation of additive manufacturing.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div layer of metal powder is spread on a table using a coater (see the following image from [2]) and then exposed by a laser.<br \/>\nThe table is then lowered and another layer of powder is applied, which is exposed again.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element \" literature cited so far, the process is also referred to as laser metal fusion (LMF) or powder bed-based laser melting or selective laser melting (SLM).<br \/>\nThe unexposed powder must then be removed.<br \/>\nThe powder is produced from a melt by means of gas atomization, see also [3].<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The requirements for the process are manifold.<br \/>\nAccording to [1], the following are particularly important:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heating the building platform (table) to reduce residual stresses<\/li>\n<li>Heating installation space<\/li>\n<li>Protective gas against oxidation<\/li>\n<li>Imaging accuracy and layer thickness<\/li>\n<li>Surface roughness as a function of up and down skin angles<\/li>\n<li>Support structures<\/li>\n<li>Heat-affected zone<\/li>\n<li>Overlapping laser guidance<\/li>\n<li>Conversion errors (e.g. no acute angles)<\/li>\n<li>Laser diameter &gt; minimum wall thickness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to [1], the following different approaches are used to simulate additive manufacturing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Permanent stretching method<\/li>\n<li>Sequentially coupled thermal-mechanical simulation<\/li>\n<li>Multi-scale approaches with micro and meso levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we limit ourselves to sequentially coupled thermal-mechanical finite element simulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During additive manufacturing, phase transitions and microstructural changes occur in metals depending on the temperature, time and location.<br \/>\nAccording to [4], particular attention must be paid to this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Different time scales between melting\/solidification in milliseconds and component production in minutes and hours<\/li>\n<li>Different length scales, in micrometers of the local melt and the size of the component in hundreds of millimeters<\/li>\n<li>High temperature gradients around the melting area, which can lead to an anisotropic material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objectives of the simulation can be derived from the literature as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Component distortion due to residual stresses caused by cooling<\/li>\n<li>Component distortion due to residual stresses after removal of the support structures<\/li>\n<li>Microstructure and material properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, the use of larger time steps and coarse discretizations of the finite element mesh seems to be common.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-3 fusion-flex-container hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" article, we have shown how the manufacturing process is defined in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.<br \/>\nEssential information for a later simulation, such as the temporal and spatial course of the exposure by a scanner, is defined and automatically transferred to the simulation.<br \/>\nBoth the definition of the process and the setup of the simulation are guided by a wizard, which significantly reduces the effort and complexity of the task.<br \/>\nThe sequential thermal-mechanical coupled analysis was demonstrated.<br \/>\nThis is also a simplification, as time and space are resolved more macroscopically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further work is required, such as the comparison of simulation and real component production, in order to be able to make statements
